ROGUE by Callie Hart

When people get too close to me, they wind up dead. Blood. Bullet holes. Stab wounds. I’ve kept my identity secret to protect the ones I love, but now the most dangerous man in my world knows exactly who I am… And he’s coming for me.

Hector Ramirez has brought war to my doorstep, but he won’t win.
I’ll fight to defend the vulnerable.
I’ll kill to protect my club.
But I’ll die to save the woman I love.

Kricket's Rating : 5 chirps

It's been a long wait, but we finally have ROGUE in our hands.  Not for the first time, Callie Hart has me dreaming about blood and crime and sex - the world she's created for Jamie "Rebel" Aubertin and Alexis "Sophia" Romero - and absolutely loving it.  Callie has such a skill for writing with an intensity that has the words jumping off the page to create the image clearly in your mind, and have you begging for more, more, MORE!

In this second installment of the Deadman's Ink series, we revisit characters - and at times even the story - that we came to love in Hart's BLOOD & ROSES series.  Rebel is the sexy, bad-ass alpha male with a hidden heart of gold and the mind of a master (intellectually and sexually).  Between Cade and his stint in the Marines, Rebel was saved from the same fate as his fictional predecessor, Zeth Mayfair, though the similarities are uncanny between the Romero sisters stories.  The girl he has come to know as Sophia, who readers all know as Alexis, has lived her life in the perceived shadow of her sister, longing to make the decisions and have the calm and focus of her older sister, Sloane.  Little did she know, the two are more alike than they think.  The parallelism was beautifully done, making readers question if the main story was Rebel's, or Sloane and Sophia's.  Regardless, I was left wanting more and foaming at the mouth with impatience for HELLION's release.

SUSTAINED - Emma Chase

A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy and Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that—that, I know how to do.

5 Chirps

I am not sure what I loved more about this book - the gaggle of orphans, their young and somewhat naive caretaker, or the complex playboy destined to fall for the messy life he's consciously avoided so far.   Emma Chase weaves the hilarity and distress of every day life of parenting with the fantasy of fairy tale romance to create what can only be considered a 5 Stare must-read.

Jake Becker starts the story as a lonely defense attorney, a playboy spending his mornings doling out a well-rehearsed brush off speech.  His future quite literally slams into him on the street - in the form of Rory McQuaid.  When the young boy attempts to pickpocket him, Jake decides to go easy on the little guy and instead of turn him over to the cops, drives him home to speak with his parents.  Turns out, that won't be possible as his parents recently died in a horrific car accident.  He and his five siblings are now in the care of their 26 year old aunt, Chelsea McQuaid.

Chelsea is the type of woman who will take a man's breath away, but have him laughing the moment it returns.  She's young, beautiful, witty, and strong-willed.  She's carrying the weight of six worlds on her shoulders, and for the most part she's going it with grace.  Jake can't help but be in awe of her.  He decides she is the woman that he wants to learn more about, and in that effort, he also becomes quite attached to the children.

And then the inevitable happens...right about the time they settle into a domestic routine, the world crumbles around them.  Jake is forced to put his legal abilities to use, and when he does, he is also reminded that a life with Chelsea and the kids isn't what he saw for himself.  Finding their way back to each other doesn't seem easy, it doesn't seem possible.   But eventually  they do, as with all the greats, and the ending is a perfect example of less is more.  I have been waiting what seems like forever for a man like Jake Becker and this book.

Meet Nick Kenzy...

After two years of working my ass off as a Wall Street analyst, I’m out of a job, with no warning, no thank you, and no severance. Am I angry? You’re damn right I

am. So when I head to the Hamptons for the weekend to spend time with my granddad, I plan to regroup and relax before I return to the city to hit the job search hard. I don’t need any distractions. Then I meet Leigh. Suddenly, a summer temptation makes me question everything I want for my future...

Summer fun before my wedding...

I have one goal this summer. Hang with my besties for some much needed sun, sand, and relaxation while I put the final touches on my idyllic wedding. Now, I have to make a choice that’s tearing me apart, and could shatter the lives of the two men I love...

Turns into summer sins....

I have one goal this summer. CHILL. Do nothing. Nada. I need simple before I have to head into Manhattan to take on a high powered position on Wall Street. I didn't count on a dark haired, inky- eyed spitfire who'd spin my world upside down, or make me burn for things I never thought I wanted. I vowed to make her my summer fling, but had no idea she was claimed by another. And now that she possessed not only my body but my soul, the stakes are too high for me to lose her...

KRICKET'S REVIEW :

 4 Chirps

The way I see it, there are two forms of rebellion. There is rebellion for the sake of rebellion, and there is rebellion for the sake of fulfillment. The problem with this is that in either situation, resistance is key. Resistance of convention and authority, and ultimately the greater good.

Mercy Raye - a.k.a. Melody Fitzgerald - is the picture of rebellion for the sake of fulfillment. She began her journey of self-destruction early in life, searching for something to ease the feelings of disapproval inflicted by her father. Deep down, though, she knew that she was meant for more - that she was capable of more. She's a mess, but she's the most put together mess possible. Her story shows what it looks like to know what is good for you but to rebel against it anyway.

On the other hand, her love interest Ash is the epitome of rebellion for the sake of rebellion. He is simply living to do as he pleases, living as if the future is now, not caring what the world has in store for him or what is best for him. Eventually he leads himself into the hospital, and it's at that time that Mercy finally sees the difference between herself and him. And what it is she needs to do for herself and her future.

In that moment, the readers heart breaks a little, but it's only destined to break more before it's healed.  In that moment, Mercy realized that young June - the daughter of her drummer and triangular love interest - needs to be protected from her.  She chooses to sacrifice her own happiness to save little June, and Brad - and also give Brad the time he needs to find his own way. This was a hard story to read, dealing with real issues and with hard facts of life. There was a good lesson to be learned though, and I recommend it to anyone who might be struggling with what is real and what might be in life.

RaeLee's Review:

4 Chirps

Originally, I saw this book going in several different directions, from the horribly sad to the big HEA. However, the author surprised me with added bonuses; a second chance love affair and a bit of a love triangle. But most important, self discovery and love. The story starts out with Mercy Raye- AKA Melody Fitzgerald rocking out with her band mates at the turn of the century---let's party like its 1999!. No really, that's when the story begins.

The 90's was all about rebellion against the "man" but in this story it was mainly rebellion against family and love and life and most importantly, rebellion against herself. Mercy was a product of her choices. Some good, some not so good. The day Melody died and Mercy was born, something changed. She became cold and distracted.  Mercy is a mess. She is beautiful and she knows it. She needs her life to be extraordinary for her to feel normal...ordinary.

When it comes down to it, she learns over the course of this story and years that she needs to love herself in order to move on and love another.

What started as a typical angst filled book, ended in a beautiful lesson. Sometimes the road is bumpy and you can easily be lost, but no matter how long you meander those roads and no matter how long it takes, you keep moving forward. You stand up for yourself and you learn, however hard it may be, that love comes from within.

Manwhore + 1 by Katy Evans

BUY LINKS:

Amazon Paperback: http://amzn.to/1QObyTU

MY REVIEW:

5 + Stars

In Manwhore we met - and ultimately fell in love with - Malcolm Kyle Preston Logan Saint.  We envied and admired Rachel Livingston.   Manwhore + 1 expands on those feelings, and you're left with a feeling of loss when you reach the final page.  Katy's ability to make the fanciful realistic is a refreshing talent not seen often enough.   Not only does she create characters that you see your own best friends reflected in, but she's also manage to make a little word like "DIBS" infamous, and she's turned a simple corner kiss into the most desirable of seduction tactics.  And that was just with book 1.  What she managed to do to me with book 2 was absolute sorcery.

I'd do it all again for another moment with him.

After one of the most frustrating cliffhangers I've ever read, Manwhore +1 resumes the story exactly where it left off with, at the offices of M4 with Rachel about to see Saint for the first time in four weeks.   She's not sure what is about to transpire, but she's hopeful that he's ready for them to talk through what had happened. What ultimately ends up happening, though, is Saint offering her a job with Interface.  In her mind, knowing that he's never touched any of his employees, she is convinced the job offer is a sign of their absolute ending.  She refuses the job, reinforcing that the only thing she really wants is him.

No.   I work for what I most want.  I win it, or I don't feel like it's mine at all.

We don't have to wait long before we begin to see more of the things we loved about Manwhore, as Saint lures Rachel back to him, and at his insistence, the two of them take things slow.  The story never does explain it clearly, but I took this as yet another of Saint's efforts to truly earn what he has, to make it his own rather than to have it fall into his lap at the manipulation of others.

In a world where he can buy anything he wants, I'm his littlest thing.  And he's my biggest, grandest thing.

Saint proves once again that billionaire doesn't have to mean untouchable.  Yes, he's sin on a stick and every woman wants him, but he's also down to earth and maintains a boyish charm that no other book boyfriend has.  He acknowledges that other women are available to him, and that he can have nearly any woman he wants.  But none of them are Rachel.  None of them make him feel like he is everything by being nothing more than the man he is.

I'm a challenge to you, Saint.  You'll finally get me and then you'll be done with me.

Rachel is still battling her own demons through the book.  She has already told Saint that she loves him, before things went bad.   She knows that she is still in love with him, but she's afraid of what he will do if she tells him.  Is she protecting her heart, or their relationship?  I'm not entirely sure, but her uncertainty is definitely there.

You use something you discard.  And I'll never be done with you.

And to top things off, there's Saint's romantic side.  Popping up left and right throughout the book, reminding us why we waited so long for the second installment of this series.  All the things that we went through our lives without for months while we anxiously anticipated his return.   I spent the entirety of this book reading his lines with a goofy grin on my face.  I can guarantee that you'll end up with what I now refer to as "Saint face" as well.
