soul was detached again. Deep down inside, she hoped she’d never wake up from it because, in her
eyes, life without emotion and memories isn’t worth living.
But she does wake up and discovers she can still feel and remember everything she experienced over
the last few months. Alex is also telling her that everything’s okay, that he didn’t betray her, and that
what she thought happened really didn’t.
Gemma isn’t sure if she can trust Alex, so she tries to keep her distance from him, even though the
electric connection and her desire make it nearly impossible. The only person she can trust is Laylen, but
even that becomes complicated when the lines of their friendship begin to blur.
While Gemma struggles with her emotions and relationships, she searches for her mother, entering a dangerous world of secrets, seduction, and evil. The further she digs into her mother’s secrets and past, the more she wonders what waits for her at the end of her search and if maybe some things are better left in the dark.

Kricket's Rating : 4 Chirps
Chock full of supernatural, this book appeals to the more fanciful aspects of your imagination. I enjoyed that there were all levels of magical creatures, and that it wasn't childishly so. I've only read a handful of paranormal books, but every time I pick up one of Jessica's, I can't seem to put it down. This was no different. I was drawn in by Gemma's internal tug of war between Alex and Laylen, torn up by the confusion that she was feeling.
Alex has secrets, and he continues hiding them from Gemma. She knows this, and as a result, continues to have difficulty trusting him - despite the electric tug she feels towards him. The feelings are unfamiliar to her, and she struggles to decipher what is between them. The one thing that doesn't seem confusing to her, though, is what to do with the attraction she feels towards him. The scenes between the two are scorching, and for me personally, had me rooting for them to sort their stuff out.
But there's another important aspect to consider - Laylen. The vampire that Gemma trusts undoubtedly. The attraction is there, so is yet another confusing draw. The feelings leave Gemma reeling, wondering who she feels what for. When she is with Laylen, Alex doesn't seem to exist. She has to forcibly remind herself of his existence. I won't lie and say I didn't forget for a minute myself, during one particular scene. But I may have a bit of a masochistic nature.
All in all, the highlights of the book for me were the scenes of Gemma's confusion. As it went on, and more was revealed, I actually ended up more than a bit confused. But for me, that confusion only meant that I want to read it again, and try to sort what I already know out with what I'm reading. I can say I'm thoroughly looking forward to the next installment of this one as well.
